Activity:
SENSE AND COUNT
Materials:
- My Five Senses by Aliki
- Activity tuneTOON® and tuneTOON®
- Five tables set up to represent each of the senses (sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste) with items on each (see examples in middle section below)
- Song/lyrics “Let’s Use Our Senses”
- Scarf/blindfold
- Dolfi puppet
- Paper
- Markers
- Flip chart
Goals:
- Children learn to use their different senses to explore and learn.
- Children enjoy learning new things and feel competent while making new discoveries.
- Children work together to problem solve and take turns.
Beginning:
- Reintroduce Dolfi the puppet and say, “Today we are going to use our senses to explore and learn. Let’s join Dolfi in the song: “Let’s Use Our Senses.” Refer to the song chart as you sing.
- Say: “Today we’re going to read the book called My Five Senses by Aliki. What are our five senses? Who would like to tell us what they are?” Let the children list all the senses and share what they use each sense for. Listen to and acknowledge the children’s observations.
- Tell children that they are going to play a guessing game using their senses and learn to explore the number and type of items in each “sense” area.
Middle:
- Set up five areas/tables, one for each of the senses: vision, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Put in each area specific items for children to explore and count. For example: Vision area-- a big jar of beads; Hearing--different items that make sounds (rattles, bells, maracas, shakers); Touch-- different texture papers, cloth and fabric, gummy bears, cotton balls; Smell-- Fruit, soaps, candles, chewing gums, leaves and flowers; Taste--salty crackers, sweet cookies, slices of lemon (sour), leaves of oregano or parsley (bitter).
- Have children work in pairs in which one child is blindfolded and the other “guides” him/her to all the “sense” areas. The blindfolded child will guess how many items are in each area and what the items are. The last area of discovery will be the vision one, when the child does not need to cover his/her eyes any longer. Discuss the difference in our perceptions when using the different senses. Have the “guiding” child report how many items and what types were found in each area. Chart these findings on the board.
End:
- Think together about which of the senses has provided the best estimate for the number of items and type in each area.
- Have Dolfi join the children in singing the song again.
Extend:
- Leave the book My Five Senses by Aliki in the play area/library for the children to read.
- Have children make a bar graph depicting the guessed numbers as perceived by each pair for each of the five senses, and also the accurate numbers.
- Have children list all the steps needed to determine and identify items when using different senses.
