Goals:
- Children learn to value and appreciate own abilities and skills.
- Children are able to participate cooperatively and responsibly in a group.
- Children understand safe and unsafe behaviors.
Beginning:
- Reintroduce Dolfi. Say, “Dolfi loves to play outside! Let’s sing with Dolfi the song: ‘It’s Fun To Play Outside.’” Sing together and refer to the song lyrics as you sing. Say, “Dolfi is so excited about playing outside that it forgets how to be safe when playing with friends and running around. Another group of friends is rambunctious on the playground. Let’s hear the story about this group of friends in the book called: Please Play Safe! by Margery Cuyler.” Read the book while showing the pictures on each page. Pause each time that a new safety situation arises and ask the children for their opinion of how we need to play in order to be safe not hurting ourselves or others. Allow for a dialogue to take place. Ask the children about their experiences with these outside play situations.
Middle:
- Tell the children that they are going to make their own
- safety wheel book. Give each child a template of two large circles. One circle needs to be divided into four parts. Have children select different fun activities he/she does outside in the playground. Have children draw and find pictures from magazines and glue onto the circle. Help children cut the inside quarter of the second circle. Attach the circles with a paper fastener or string.
- Have the children look and see the outside activity and discuss the safety rules for it. Help write the rules on the back of their wheel book (for young children, have them make a simple round poster of their activities.
- Help the children to come up with safety rules to keep when playing outside and list them on the board. Make sure to illustrate each rule with signs and symbols to facilitate the understanding of children who are at the pre-literacy stage.
End:
- Review the safety rules with the children and post on the wall. Have Dolfi join the children in singing the song again.
Extend:
- Leave the book Please Play Safe! by Margery Cuyler by Mike Reiss in the play area/library for the children to read.
- Have children display their “Playing Outside Safety Wheel Book” in the reading area to share.
- Have children come up with script to role play different situations and show unsafe and safe behaviors as related to the specific scenario.
