My Special Snowman

Domain:

Read the book "Snow Party" by Harriet Ziefert, discuss how holiday celebrations are uniqueand special, and then the children will create their own snowman.

Sort, select and plan EduPod activities that meet the required standards and meet the class developmental and learning readiness needs

Materials:

  • "Snow Party" by Harriet Ziefert
  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Pre-cut shapes (if needed)
  • Two brass brads per snowman to connect circles
  • Dolfi Puppet
  • Song “It’s Great to Be Me”
  • Activity tuneTOON® and tuneTOON®

Goals:

  • To compare their characteristics with others.
  • To display confidence in their unique abilities and characteristics.

Beginning:

  • Introduce Dolfi the puppet. Sing “It’s Great to Be Me.” Refer to the song
  • lyrics as you sing. Repeat the song with movements and encourage the children to imitate you.
  • Say, “Today we’re going to read the book "Snow Party". The person who wrote this book is Harriet Ziefert. What do you see on the cover? Have you ever built a snowman?” Listen to and acknowledge the children’s observations.
  • Say, “This book is about “snow people” and their special holiday traditions. Families celebrate holidays in many different ways. Let’s read the story and see how the family of snow people have their own holiday traditions.”
  • Read the story. Pause to discuss winter, snow and the special celebrations in the story. Tell the children they are going to make a picture of a snowman using different sizes of circles either by cutting their own shapes or using pre-cut shapes (circles, hats, noses-depending on the interest and abilities of children). Emphasize the different circle sizes that are used to create the shape of the snowman. Give each child the materials needed to complete the project.

Middle:

  • Encourage the children to use markers, glitter or other items to decorate their “snow people”. Connect each circle to the next smallest circle with a brass brad.
  • Ask the children what special traditions they have in their families to celebrate holidays. Discuss how many families have holiday traditions, some are different and some are the same, and that we can have fun learning about other families’ traditions.

End:

  • Tell the children to share their “snow people” with their families and ask about their own family traditions. Sing “It’s Great to Be Me” as the children wash their hands and walk to the next activity in the classroom’s daily routine.

Extend:

  • Bring snow (or use ice if no snow is available) into the sensory table and encourage children to build mini snowmen and explore the sensation of cold.
  • Build snowmen out of three sizes of marshmallows as a winter party treat.
