Materiales

  • Aunt Isabel Tells a Good One by Kate Duke
  • “Once Upon a Time” paper template
  • Markers
  • Colored pencils
  • String
  • Hole-punch
  • Song/ lyrics chart “I Love Story Time”
  • Activity tuneTOON® and tuneTOON®

Metas

  • Children recognize and write letters or letter-like shapes.
  • Children coordinate ability to use pencil.
  • Children feel competent in having phonological awareness.

Beginning

  • Gather children together to join you and Dolfi in the circle. Say, “Dolfi loves story time and would like to sing the song ‘I Love Story Time’ with us.” Use the lyrics chart to help the children follow along.
  • Ask the children to reflect on their story time experiences and what they like about it. Listen to the children and acknowledge their shared experiences and observations. Say, “Today we are going to read a story about a girl named Penelope who came to spend the night with her Aunt Isabel. Aunt Isabel is a wonderful story teller. She and Penelope make up a story. During the story, Aunt Isabel teaches us how to make up a good story. Let’s see what they came up with.”
  • Read the story while sharing the pictures with the children.

Middle

  • Say, “You are going to make up your own story. The stories will start with ‘Once upon a time...’ Everyone will write his/her own story. You can write by using letters and words, and you can also ‘write’ by drawing pictures. If you need me, I will help you when you need to write your story. You can also decorate your story. You will be the illustrator as well. Do you know what an illustrator is?”

End

  • Have the children share their stories with friends. Help them compile all the stories when done into a book. Make a hole at the edge of the paper and tie with a string.
  • Have Dolfi lead the children in singing the song “I Love Story Time” again.

Extensión

  • Leave the book Aunt Isabel Tells a Good One by Kate Duke in the play area/library for the children to read.
  • Have children make a cover page for the book, listing all their names as authors and illustrators. Take a photo of each child to add to the book.
  • Have the book “Once Upon A Time” authored by the children in the play area/library for the children to read.
