The Rainbow Salad

Children will be able to personalize their rainbow salad & learn the importance offruits & veggies.

Materiales:

  • Variety of fresh fruit and vegetables
  • Small brown bags to put each fruit and vegetable in.
  • A scarf or eye mask to cover eyes
  • Plates/trays
  • Chart paper/dry erase board
  • Bowls
  • Butter knife (plastic fork works well)
  • Songs "Let’s Use Our Senses"

Metas:

  • To discover characteristics of fruit and vegetables and learn their Importance.
  • Manipulate small objects to increase hand eye coordination.

Beginning:

  • Have Dolfi lead the children in singing "Nature Food is Good for You" song.
  • Say, we are going to learn more about fruit and vegetables. We need to eat each day 5 servings of fruit and vegetables at least 3 helpings of vegetables a day and 2 helpings of fruits; they provide our body with the vitamins and minerals we need, for us to grow healthy.
  • Introduce each fruit and vegetable and allow the children to feel, smell, and look at it.
  • Introduce the senses of hearing, vision, taste, smell and touch to the children.
  • With the help of Dolfi sing with the children following the lyric chart the "Let’s Use our Senses" song.
  • Ask the children to put the fruit and vegetable each into a brown bag.
  • Have each child in his/her turn blindfold their eyes with a scarf or an eye mask.
  • Ask each child to put his/her hand into the bag and feel what is inside. Ask the child to describe what it feels like and to guess: what is the fruit/vegetable? What is the size of it? What does the texture feel like? And what are the shape and color of the fruit/vegetable item.

Middle:

  • Allow children to enjoy the sensory experience.
  • Once all the fruit and vegetables were identified and put in a big bowl.
  • Take each item and cut a piece and put one on each one of the small trays (one per child).
  • Ask the children to taste the piece of fruit and vegetable as you pass each one at the time and choose the ones they like to use for their salads.
  • Give each child a work surface (tray or plate).
  • Next give each child a bowl to put their cut fruit in, and a butter knife/plastic fork. Have the song Let’s Use our Senses play in the background
  • Have the child cut the fruits and vegetables that each like and make a salad.

End:

  • Chart their favorite fruits and vegetables on a chart paper or on a dry erase board.
  • Have the children eat their rainbow salad
  • Have Dolfi lead the children in singing the song "Let's Use Our Senses" following the lyric chart

Extensión:

  • Take pictures with a camera of each child with this/her Rainbow Salad to include on the documentation panel.
  • Make a collage of the pictures from this activity with the children.
  • Display the chart of the favorite fruits and vegetables as identified by each child and suggest to children to try out new fruits and vegetables and add them to the chart.
  • Let children draw their bowl of Rainbow salad and decorate it.
