All About Me Portrait

In this activity, your child will create a paper person that resembles him/her to helpidentify his/her special characteristics!

Materials:
- Colored Paper
- Hand mirror
- Washable markers
- Non-toxic glue
- Stickers
- Pipe cleaners
- Pom-pom balls
- Brown paper lunch bag
- Yarn
- Child friendly safety scissors
Importance of Activity:
- Your child will use observation and math skills as he/she counts the number and different types of his/her facial features. Your child will work on his/her verbal skills as he/she answers questions. The child’s fine motor skills will be used when he/she decorates the paper person.
Goals:
- identifies characteristics, preferences and experiences as similar and different from others
- understands the meaning of verbal language and responds verbally with words, phrases and ideas
Suggested Dialogue:
- What do you see in the mirror?
- What color is your hair?
- How many eyes do you have?
- Can you tell me about what you are making?
- What is special about you?
- What color eyes does your paper person have?
- What color hair?
- Tell me about this portrait. What do you like about it?
- What do you like about being with others who are special to you?
Instructions:
- Sing the song with your child.
- Place the mat on the playing area.
- Gather the needed materials.
- Give your child the hand mirror to look in. Ask the child to describe him/herself. Say, “What do you see?”
- Suggest to your child to draw him/herself on the paper bag. Say, “We are going to make this paper person look just like you!”
- Help your draw him/her on the lunch paper bag and encourage your child to use washable markers, pipe cleaners, pom-pom balls, stickers, and yarn to decorate. You can also suggest to the child to use the colored paper to cut shapes and glue them on the paper bag.
- Ask the child to describe his/her work.
- Ask your child questions such as,“What is special about you?” “What do you like when you are with people who are special to you?
- End the activity by singing the song with your child.
- Clean up together. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
