Picture Walk

In this activity, you will use the story in a book to help your child explore his/herfeelings about friendship!

Materials:

  • Washable Markers
  • Book suggestion: “Do You Want To Be My Friend?” by Eric Carle

Importance of Activity:

  • In this activity, your child will begin to identify and label his/her feelings and understand the meaning of friendships. Reading a book with your child will increase his/her ability to recognize letters and words through sight and sound. It will strengthen your parent-child relationship.

Goals:

  • understands and responds to text presented by adults (example: books).
  • interacts with adults cooperatively by sharing, planning, and solving problems together
  • strengthen parent-child relationship

Suggested Dialogue:

  • Lonely is when you feel sad because you are all alone.
  • What is happening?
  • Why do you think he feels that way?
  • What do you like to do with your friends?
  • What makes someone a good friend?
  • How do we make friends?
  • Who are your friends?
  • How did you become friends?
  • I have friends too. I like to _______ with them.

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song with your child.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area.
  3. Ask the child about experiences when they have felt lonely. Ask questions such as, “Do you ever feel lonely when there is no one to play with?”
  4. Read the suggested book “Do You Want To Be My Friend?” by Eric Carle or one of your child’s favorite books that involve a situation where the main character learns to make friends.
  1. Do a picture walk with the book. Say, “We can tell what’s happening in this story by looking at the pictures. What do you see? What just happened in the story?”
  2. Use the suggested dialogue to encourage your child to share his/her ideas about friendship. Share your experiences as well.
  3. End the activity by singing the song again with your child.
  4. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
