Holiday Memories

In this activity, you will create a holiday memory book with your child!

Sort, select and plan Bilingual ParentPod™ activities that meet your child’s developmental and learning readiness needs

Materials:

  • Photos of your family eating during the holidays
  • String
  • Non-toxic glue
  • White paper
  • Single hole punch

Importance of Activity:

  • In this activity, your child will express his/her individuality by creating a holiday memory book. Your child will improve language skills when discussing what your family eats during the holidays. Learning about family traditions and holidays together will strengthen your parent-child relationship.

Goals:

  • knows own characteristics, preferences and experiences as similar to and different from others’
  • recognizes own skills and accomplishments, and takes pleasure in performing them
  • uses verbal language
  • strengthen parent-child relationship

Suggested Dialogue:

  • Do you enjoy celebrating the holidays with our family?
  • Have you noticed that we eat food when we celebrate a holiday?
  • Every family celebrates the holidays and prepares food to eat together.
  • How do you feel when we celebrate holidays?
  • Let’s look at photos of our family during the holidays!
  • What is your favorite holiday food?
  • Do you know what my favorite food is?

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song, “Languages All Around Us” with your child.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area.
  3. Arrange the craft supplies in front of your child on the mat.
  4. Say, “Do you enjoy celebrating holidays with our family and friends? Have you noticed that we eat food during our holiday celebrations?”
  5. Show your child pictures of you and your family eating during various holidays.
  6. Help your child make a holiday memory book. Let your child choose pictures to glue onto the white paper. Talk to your child about family traditions that involve food during the holidays.
  1. Ask your child to describe each picture, then write what he/she says below each picture.
  2. Once you and your child have finished gluing pictures onto the paper, put them into a pile and punch a hole in the top left corner of the papers. Then, put a piece of string through the hole and tie a bow.
  3. Now your child has a holiday memory book! You and your child can add to the memory book each time you and your family celebrate a holiday.
  4. Sing the song, “Languages All Around Us” with your child again.
  5. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
