Domain: Health & Routines

In this activity, you and your child will create a “playing outside safety book!”

Sort, select and plan Bilingual ParentPod™ activities that meet your child’s developmental and learning readiness needs

Materials:

  • Paper
  • Tape
  • Non-toxic glue
  • Magazines
  • Washable markers
  • Safety scissors
  • Activity tuneTOON
  • TuneTOON®
  • Emotion cards

Importance of Activity:

  • It is important for your child to know that there are safety rules for everything we do, including playing outside!
  • The “playing outside safety book” will serve as a creative way to remind your child of how to stay safe while playing outside.

Goals:

  • Child recognizes own skills and accomplishments and takes pleasure in performing them.
  • Strengthening parent-child relationship.
  • Child knows and applies safety rules in a variety of situations.
  • Child is interested in books, songs, rhymes, stories, writing and other literacy-based activities.
  • Child uses language to communicate.

Suggested Dialogue:

  • What is your favorite outside? Why?
  • When you play (insert favorite activity here) how do you feel?
  • When you play, what rules do you need to follow in order to be safe?
  • My favorite outside activity is riding my bike. When I am riding my bike I feel happy!
  • When you are playing outside, how do you stay safe? When I ride my bike, I stay safe by wearing a helmet and making sure to look and listen everywhere I go.

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song with your child while looking at the “It’s Fun to Play Outside” activity tuneTOON.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area.
  3. Arrange the supplies in front of your child on the playing area.
  4. Say, “Today we are going to make a safety book for playing outside!”
  5. Ask your child what his/her favorite outside activities are. Share your favorite outside activities. Ask your child about the safety rules that he/she follows when he/she plays outside. Express the importance of safety rules.
  6. Now it’s time to begin making your playing outside safety book! Start by folding five 8x11 papers in half. Connect the papers by taping them together on the 11 inch side of each paper so that you have an accordion book. Add more papers as needed.
  1. Have your child look through magazines and cut out pictures of his/her favorite outside activities. Discuss the activities that your child chooses. Have your child glue pictures on each page, so that there is a different activity on each page. Talk about the safety rules that need to be followed for each activity. For example, if your child cuts out a picture of a swing set, you can talk to your child about sun safety and how to properly use a swing.
  2. On each page, help your child write words that will remind him/her of the safety rules he/she needs to follow. For example, if your child glues a picture of a bicycle on a page, you could write "stop", "look", "listen" and "helmet".
  3. Put the book in an easily accessible place. Remember you and your child can always add to your safety book!
  4. Sing the song again with your child.
  5. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
