My Dusting Socks

In this activity, you and your child will create dusting socks!

Sort, select and plan Bilingual ParentPod™ activities that meet your child’s developmental and learning readiness needs

Materials:

  • Old pair of socks
  • Activity tuneTOON®

Importance of Activity:

  • As your child gets older, it is important for him/her to understand that he/she will begin to have more responsibilities, such as chores.
  • This activity provides you with a fun way to introduce the responsibility of cleaning!

Goals:

  • Child recognizes own skills and accomplishments and takes pleasure in performing them.
  • Strengthening parent-child relationship.
  • Child can use their arms and legs to move in a coordinated way.
  • Child understands the meaning of verbal language and responds verbally with words, phrases and ideas.
  • Child understands the change in responsibilities associated with growing up.

Suggested Dialogue:

  • Now that you are getting older, you are going to get new responsibilities.
  • How does having new responsibilities make you feel?
  • When I was your age, I had responsibilities too! I had to try my best to make my bed and keep my room clean.
  • Which one of the chores do you like to do?
  • Let’s dance to the music while we use our dusting socks!
  • How do you feel when you dance?

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song with your child while looking at the “Chores Are Fun” activity tuneTOON®.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area.
  3. Arrange the old socks in front of your child.
  4. Say, “Today we are going to make dusting socks and dance!”
  5. Talk about responsibilities with your child. Explain to him/her that as he/she gets older, he/she will begin to have more responsibilities. This can be a challenging change for children, so try your best to make it seem fun. Share the responsibilities you had when you were your child’s age. Talk about how it made you feel to have new responsibilities.
  1. Now it is time to make dusting socks!
  2. Turn on the “Chores Are Fun” song. Help your child put the socks on his/her hands and start to dance! As you and your child dance to the music, use the dusting socks to helps you clean the furniture around you.
  3. When you are done using the dusting socks, ask your child how the dusting dance made him/her feel. You ) can make a weekly chores chart to help your child ) remember the daily tasks he/she needs to perform.
  4. Remember you can repeat this activity at any time!
  5. End the activity by singing the song again with your child.
  6. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
