Holiday Food Plate

In this activity, you will create a holiday food plate with your child!

Sort, select and plan Bilingual ParentPod™ activities that meet your child’s developmental and learning readiness needs

Materials:

  • Photos of your family eating during the holidays
  • Paper plates
  • Non-toxic glue
  • Safety-scissors
  • Photos of family holiday foods
  • (from magazines, coupons, etc)

Importance of Activity:

  • In this activity, your child will express their individuality by creating a holiday food plate. Your child will improve language skills when discussing what your family eats during the holidays. Learning about family traditions and holidays together will strengthen your parent-child relationship.

Goals:

  • Know own characteristics, preferences and experiences as similar to and different from others
  • Recognize own skills and accomplishments, and takes pleasure in performing them
  • Uses verbal language
  • Strengthen parent-child relationship

Suggested Dialogue:

  • Do you enjoy celebrating the holidays with our family?
  • Have you noticed that we eat special foods when we celebrate a holiday?
  • Most families celebrates holidays and prepares food to eat together.
  • How do you feel when we celebrate holidays?
  • Let’s look at photos of our family during the holidays!
  • What is your favorite holiday food?
  • Do you know what my favorite food is?

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song, “Languages All Around Us,” with your child.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area.
  3. Arrange the craft supplies in front of your child on the mat.
  4. Say, “Do you enjoy celebrating holidays with our family and friends? Have you noticed that we eat special foods during our holiday celebrations?”
  5. Show your child pictures of you and your family eating during various holidays.
  1. Make a holiday food plate with your child. Have your child choose pictures from magazines, coupons, are weekly grocery ads, to glue onto the paper plate. Your child may need help cutting them out. Talk to your child about family traditions that involve food during the holidays.
  2. Ask your child to describe each picture, and then write what they say below.
  3. Now your child has a holiday food plate!
  4. Sing the song, “Languages All Around Us,” with your child again.
  5. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
