My Manners Advice List

Materials:

  • The lyrics for the song “I Forgot My Manners”
  • “I Forgot My Manners” tuneTOON
  • A piece of cardboard cut into a sheet from a box
  • Washable Markers or crayons

Importance of Activity:

  • In this activity you and your child will listen to the song about manners and look at the tuneTOON.
  • Together you will come up with The Manners Advice List.
  • Doing this activity will enhance your child's understanding of appropriate and inappropriate behaviors, and the importance of manners to good relationships.

Goals:

  • develops ways to control responses in appropriate ways
  • recognizes own skills and accomplishments and takes pleasure in performing them
  • strengthen parent-child relationship
  • uses verbal language

Suggested Dialogue:

  • What are manners? Do you have manners?
  • Why is it important to have manners?
  • When someone is polite to you, how does it make you feel?
  • What are the inappropriate behaviors in the song?
  • How do you think Stella is feeling?
  • What is Ami doing? When you are eating a meal at the table, is it good manners to roll on the floor?
  • Is it okay to throw food across the table? Why or why not?
  • What advice would you like to give your friend when he/she is hitting, pushing, or throwing food?
  • What good manners are in the song?

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song, “I Forget My Manners” with your child.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area. Place the materials in front of your child.
  3. Look at the tuneTOON® and ask your child to describe the scene. Ask questions such as, “How do you think Stella is feeling? What is Ami doing? When you are eating a meal at the table, is it good manners to roll on the floor?”
  4. Say, “Let’s listen to the song and follow the lyrics. Let’s try to figure out which behaviors in the song are inappropriate and which are appropriate.”
  5. Listen together and write down with your child all the behaviors (appropriate and inappropriate).
  1. Say, “Do you know what manners are? Let’s see if we can come up with a Manners Advice List so we can help others follow appropriate manners.”
  2. Encourage your child to think about positive behaviors instead of the inappropriate behaviors that appeared in the song and the tuneTOON®.
  3. Help your child write every suggestion on the advice board with markers. Make a list let your child draw pictures next to each suggestion.
  4. Go over The Manners Advice List, and post the list in a place that the child can easily see and be reminded of manners.
  5. End the activity by singing the song, “I Forget My Manners” again with your child and moving to the music.
  6. Clean the playing area. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
