  • As you go through your family album, your child will strengthen his/her knowledge of your family's history, roles, careers and special memories.
  • It is extremely important that your child is knowledgeable in his/her family history, as this knowledge contributes to self-image and self-esteem.

Goals:

  • Child knows how to write using scribbles, symbols, letters and words to represent meaning.
  • Child understands that each word has a meaning.
  • Child recognizes own skills and accomplishments and takes pleasure in performing them.
  • Child is aware and appreciates the similarities and differences between self and others.
  • Strengthening parent-child relationship.

Suggested Dialogue:

  • Do you know how many sisters I have? Let’s look at the pictures and count together!
  • Do you know how many cousins you have?
  • Are there more girls or boys in our family? Let’s count!
  • Did you know that you have a great, great grandfather? Let’s find a picture of him in our family album!
  • Do I have more sisters or brothers? Did you know that my sisters and brothers are your aunts and uncles!
  • How many family roles have we come up with?

Instructions:

  1. Sing the song with your child.
  2. Place the mat on the playing area.
  3. Put your family album, paper, index cards and a pencil in front of your child.
  4. Discuss with your child family membership and roles. Say, “Each member of our family has a role. I am your mother/father, my role is to take care of you. You are my daughter/son. Who else do we have in the family and what roles do they have?"
  5. Write each one of the roles you and your child came up with on an index card.
  6. Spread out the index cards in front of you.
  1. Begin looking at the family album with your child. Let your child take the lead. Let him/her ask questions about the photos. As you look through the album, help your child match the index cards with photos. This will give your child a concrete example of each classification.
  2. Now make a list of people under each group (example: uncles, aunts, grandpas, cousins,etc.).
  3. Count how many people are in each category on your list. Show your child that a person can have more than one role (example: You are a parent, a spouse/partner)
  4. End the activity by singing the song again with your child.
  5. Fold the playing mat together and put it away.
